The Bennington Battle Monument
A Vermont owned State Historic Site, the Bennington Battle Monument is 306 feet 4 and 1/2 inches tall and was completed and dedicated in 1891. It is constructed from blue-grey magnesium limestone.
The Monument was built to commemorate the Battle of Bennington which occurred on August 16, 1777. This battle lead up to the battle of Saratoga where General Burgoyne’s weakened army was defeated. This is considered to be the turning point in the Revolutionary War.
The Monument is owned and operated by the State of Vermont. Special events are supported by The Friends of the Monument, a non-profit volunteer group. A number of events are scheduled at the Monument each year, and the public is welcome.
